Food Deserts in Philadelphia
Mapping Philadelphia's Food Deserts
We define a food deserte as any area in Philadelphia that is further than 0.5 miles from a greengrocer, farmers market, or supermarket. Starting by identifying these types of shop from OpenStreetMap, we found 5 greengrocers, 64 farmers markets, and 72 supermarkets.
Looking at the 140 square miles of land within Philadelphia's borders, and drawing a 0.5 mile radius around each shop, we found food deserts stretched across 82 square miles, roughly 59% of Philadelphia's total area.
